Kaolin Clay
A fine mineral clay applied as a spray that forms a white particle film on plant surfaces, deterring and confusing pest insects.

What it is
Kaolin clay is a naturally occurring aluminosilicate mineral mined and processed into a fine powder. Wettable kaolin formulations are approved for certified organic use. It has no chemical toxicity and leaves no harmful residue on produce or in the soil.
What it does
When dried on plant surfaces, the particle film irritates insects physically on contact and disorients those that rely on plant colour or texture cues to locate hosts. It does not kill insects outright but significantly reduces feeding, egg laying, and colonisation on treated surfaces.
When to use
Apply preventively at the start of the pest season before populations establish, or at the first sign of adult pest activity. Particularly effective against insects that locate host plants visually or through surface texture recognition. Reapply after rain or every 7 - 10 days.
When not to use
Avoid applying in windy conditions where spray drift may coat beneficial insect habitat unnecessarily. Not suitable as the sole measure against established, high-density infestations. Repeated applications may accumulate on fruit surfaces and require washing before harvest.
How to apply
- 1
Mix wettable kaolin clay at the rate recommended on the package, typically 3-6 tablespoons per quart of water.
- 2
Stir vigorously to fully suspend the clay in water. Adding a small amount of liquid soap (a few drops per quart) helps the mixture adhere to waxy leaf surfaces.
- 3
Fill a sprayer with the suspension and agitate regularly during use as the clay settles quickly.
- 4
Coat all plant surfaces with a visible white film, including stems, leaf undersides, and fruit where present.
- 5
Reapply after rainfall or irrigation has washed the coating away, and continue through the active pest season.
