Nutrient Deficiencies

Fish Emulsion

A partially decomposed fish by-product liquid fertiliser that provides a fast-acting, balanced source of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium with a wide range of trace minerals.

Fish Emulsion

What it is

Fish emulsion is produced from fish by-products through a controlled decomposition and emulsification process. It is one of the oldest organic fertilisers and is certified for organic production. It typically has an NPK ratio of around 5-2-2, making it moderately nitrogen-rich with a good balance of supporting nutrients.

What it does

Fish emulsion provides nitrogen in ammonium and amino acid forms that are rapidly available to plant roots and soil microorganisms. The phosphorus supports root development and flowering, while the array of trace minerals and amino acids support enzyme systems and overall plant metabolism. Soil microbes also break down the organic components into humus, providing a longer-term soil benefit.

When to use

Apply during periods of active growth when a nitrogen boost is needed: at transplanting, during rapid vegetative growth, and to plants showing pale or yellowing leaves that suggest nitrogen deficiency. Can be used every 2 - 4 weeks through the growing season. Also effective as a transplant solution to reduce shock and support early root establishment.

When not to use

The strong smell of fish emulsion makes it unsuitable for indoor application. Avoid applying just before harvest on leafy crops as the scent can transfer briefly to produce. Do not apply in excess to plants already growing in rich, high-nitrogen soil as very high nitrogen levels promote lush, aphid-attractive growth at the expense of fruiting.

How to apply

  1. 1

Dilute fish emulsion at the label-recommended rate, typically 2 tablespoons per gallon of water for a standard feeding solution.

  2. 2

Apply outdoors due to the strong smell. Wear gloves if preferred.

  3. 3

Water plants thoroughly before applying the fish emulsion solution to avoid root contact with concentrated material.

  4. 4

Apply the diluted solution directly to the root zone soil surface, or use as a foliar spray at half concentration if the label permits.

  5. 5

Repeat every 2 - 4 weeks during the growing season, reducing frequency or stopping as plants transition from vegetative growth to fruiting.
