Nutrient Deficiencies

Seaweed Extract

A liquid extract of kelp or other seaweeds that provides a broad spectrum of micronutrients, trace elements, and natural plant hormones to support overall plant health.

Seaweed Extract

What it is

Seaweed extract is produced by processing brown algae, most commonly kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum or Macrocystis pyrifera), through cold-pressing, fermentation, or alkaline hydrolysis. It is certified for organic production and contains more than 60 trace elements and minerals, as well as cytokinins, auxins, and other natural plant growth hormones.

What it does

Seaweed extract supplies micronutrients and trace elements that may be deficient in depleted soils and helps plants make better use of the macronutrients already present. The natural cytokinins support cell division and delay leaf senescence, while auxins encourage root development. Regular applications have been shown to improve stress tolerance, germination rates, and overall plant resilience.

When to use

Apply as a foliar spray or soil drench every 2 - 4 weeks throughout the growing season, beginning at transplanting or when seedlings have their first true leaves. Particularly valuable during periods of heat, drought, or after transplant shock. Dilute applications during seedling emergence promote strong early root establishment.

When not to use

Seaweed extract has a wide safety margin and is difficult to over-apply at recommended rates. Avoid applying undiluted concentrate directly to tender seedlings as the salt content may cause minor scorch. Very high application rates are wasteful rather than harmful but should still be avoided.

How to apply

  1. 1

Dilute concentrated seaweed extract to the rate specified on the label, typically 1-2 teaspoons per quart for foliar use or 2-4 teaspoons per quart for a soil drench.

  2. 2

Mix thoroughly with water in a clean sprayer or watering can.

  3. 3

For foliar feeding, spray all leaf surfaces until lightly wet in the early morning or evening. Avoid midday application.

  4. 4

For root feeding, apply the diluted solution directly to the root zone around each plant, using approximately 2 cups per plant for small plants and up to 2 quarts for large specimens.

  5. 5

Repeat every 2 - 4 weeks through the active growing season for sustained benefit.
