Disease

Passionfruit Woodiness Virus

A virus spread by aphids causing fruit pulp to become dry and woody with little juice, leaves to mottle and distort, and overall vine decline.

Passionfruit Woodiness Virus

Symptoms to Look For

  • Fruit skin puckering and remaining hard; interior becomes woody with little juice
  • Leaves showing yellow mosaic mottling and distorted curling
  • Reduced flowering and fruiting; vine losing vigour over multiple seasons

Affected Plants

Passionfruit

Organic Solutions

Remove infected plants

Dig out and destroy any vine showing virus symptoms promptly - there is no cure and aphids will spread it to neighbouring vines.

Aphid control

Control aphid populations with reflective mulch and insecticidal soap sprays to reduce spread of the virus to healthy plants.

Prevention

  • Source virus-free certified planting stock from reputable nurseries only
  • Do not propagate from any vine that has shown symptoms
  • Keep aphid populations low throughout the growing season as they are the primary vector

Garden, by Willowbottom recommends only organic, wildlife-friendly solutions. No synthetic pesticides, no harmful chemicals - ever.
