Insect

Pea and Bean Weevil

A small grey-brown weevil 4 - 5 mm long that grazes distinctive U-shaped notches from the leaf margins of peas and broad beans in spring.

Pea and Bean Weevil

Symptoms to Look For

  • U-shaped or scalloped notches cut from leaf edges of pea or bean seedlings
  • Small grey-brown weevils found on leaves when inspected closely
  • Seedlings weakened or growth temporarily checked in severe infestations

Affected Plants

PeaBean

Organic Solutions

Encourage rapid establishment

Sow into warm, fertile, well-prepared soil so plants establish vigour quickly and grow away from weevil damage.

Row covers

Protect seedlings with fleece or insect mesh from emergence through to 10 cm tall when plants outgrow weevil vulnerability.

Prevention

  • Damage from adult feeding is rarely severe on established plants - the main risk is to very small seedlings
  • Larvae feed on root nodules but rarely cause significant harm

Garden, by Willowbottom recommends only organic, wildlife-friendly solutions. No synthetic pesticides, no harmful chemicals - ever.
